I Thought I Already Healed This
There are few things more discouraging than recognizing an old pattern you thought you were finished with.
Maybe you’ve done years of work around it. You understand where it came from. You’ve cried about it, talked about it, prayed about it. Maybe you’ve experienced real healing around it.
Then something happens. A conversation. A relationship. A loss. A change. Someone says something, and there it is. That old feeling. That familiar reaction. That thing you were certain you had already dealt with.
And the thought comes quickly:
Seriously? I’m back here again?
Maybe you aren’t.
Healing Isn’t Always a Straight Line
We often talk about healing as though there is a finish line. You find the wound, do the work, heal it, and you’re done.
That has not been my experience of healing.
I think of one of those old Pez dispensers. You take one piece out, and another one rises. The second piece was already there. You simply couldn’t get to it while the first one was in the way.
Healing can be like that. Something becomes available to us because we now have the capacity to meet it. That doesn’t mean the healing that came before wasn’t real. It may mean another layer is ready.
This is the part I think we forget: even when a situation feels familiar, you are not meeting it as the same woman.
Maybe five years ago, you didn’t recognize the pattern at all. You simply reacted. Three years ago, maybe you recognized it six months later. Last year, you noticed it after the conversation. This time, maybe you caught it while it was happening.
That matters.
Awareness matters. The amount of time it takes you to come back to yourself matters. The questions you know how to ask now matter. The choices you can see now matter.
You may be standing in familiar territory, but you didn’t arrive there empty-handed.
What Is Here Now?
This is one reason I’ve stopped seeing the return of an old feeling as proof that something has gone wrong. I become curious instead.
What is here now?
Not, “Why am I still like this?” Not, “What did I do wrong?” Not, “Why didn’t the healing work?”
Just: What is here now?
Maybe there is another layer of grief. Maybe an old belief is showing itself in a way you couldn’t see before. Maybe your circumstances have changed. Maybe you are being invited to make a choice that wasn’t available to you before. Maybe something needs healing. Or maybe you’re simply noticing an old response sooner because you know yourself better now.
We don’t have to decide what it means before we’ve even become curious about it.
There’s a difference between starting over and meeting something again with greater capacity. You know more now. You have lived more. You have healed things you once thought would always hurt. You have survived things you weren’t sure you could survive. You have made choices the earlier version of you didn’t know were available.
And you may now have enough room inside yourself to meet something that once would have overwhelmed you.
That is not going backward. Sometimes it is healing becoming available at another layer.
You Are Allowed to Choose Again
Maybe the choice you made five years ago is still the choice you want today. Maybe it isn’t. Maybe the boundary still fits. Maybe it needs to change. Maybe the relationship looks different now. Maybe you do.
Healing doesn’t lock you into the decisions of the woman you used to be. You are allowed to notice what is true now. You are allowed to ask new questions. You are allowed to choose again.
So if an old pattern shows up this week, before you decide you’re right back where you started, pause long enough to notice who is standing here now.
We don’t return to the same place as the same woman.
Sometimes what looks like going backward is simply the next part of the journey becoming visible.
Inside The Transforming Force, we spend each month exploring the patterns, choices and experiences that shape the way we live, with room for the reality that healing often happens in layers.
