The Anxiety That Was Never Yours to Begin With

There is a particular kind of exhausting that does not match your life.

You have a good life, or good enough. You have done the work to understand where your stuff comes from. And still there is this baseline hum underneath everything, an anxiety, a watchfulness, a sense that you have to stay ready, that rest is dangerous, that something is about to go wrong. And when you go looking for the event that explains it, sometimes you cannot quite find one big enough. Nothing that happened to you fully accounts for how much you carry.

I want to offer you a possibility that lands like relief for a lot of the women I work with. Some of what you are carrying was never yours to begin with.

The nervous system you are trying to calm did not arrive in the world blank. It arrived already shaped. By the family you were born into, the emotional weather of your earliest years, the unspoken rules about what was safe and what was not, and by patterns that have been cycling through your family line for longer than anyone can remember. Children absorb the regulation patterns of the people who raise them. Stress responses get transmitted before a baby is even born. Whole emotional templates pass down through families, not as lessons anyone sat you down and taught, but as something you breathed in before your conscious mind was even online to notice.

So the anxiety that feels so completely like yours may have been your mother's first. The collapse that hits every time you get close to something you really want may be an echo of a pattern your family learned generations back, in order to survive something you never lived through. The unworthiness that follows you around may have very little to do with what happened to you, and everything to do with what happened to them.

Think about the parent who demanded that you get it right the very first time you tried anything. First try, perfect, or else. A child raised under that does not just learn to be careful. Her body learns to tense before she has even begun, to scan for the mistake, to treat rest as the thing that comes right before you get caught. That is not a belief she can talk herself out of later. It is wiring. And here is the part that goes deeper still: the parent who demanded it was very likely handed the same impossible standard by someone before them. The pattern was moving through the family long before it reached you.

None of this is to hand you one more thing to feel hopeless about. The opposite, actually. Because if a piece of what you carry was inherited, absorbed, handed down, then it was never a flaw in your character. You did not choose it. You were not old enough to refuse it. It arrived before you had any way to sort what was yours from what belonged to the people who raised you.

And what was handed to you can be handed back. These patterns can be cleared, from the body where they actually live, even the ones that are older than you are. This is what the work actually does.

I wrote a short ebook about all of this, called Why Nothing Has Worked. It is a no-pitch, clear-eyed look at why these patterns are so stubborn, where they actually come from, including the parts that came down to you through your family, and what it takes to finally clear them. If you have felt a flicker of recognition reading this, the kind your body registers before your mind catches up, trust it.
